Featured Project: Regina Highland Games
Visit the Regina Highland Games website
I've been working on the RHG website since its inception 15 years ago. In fact it was my first ever website I started building. Since then it's been through numerous versions to the present you see below. It's a small information-based site so I built it in simple XHTML with CSS and use Dreamweaver templates to manage global changes. The pages are named using the '-' as a separator to make easy-to-read user-friendly URLs.
Regina Highland Games Home Page
The home page is the first page seen by the user. I loved incorporating the element of a tartan background with a gold medallion and ribbon as the logo in the top left corner. I wrote some creative copy which listed many of the important keywords for the games and I'm a big fan of pictures on home pages so I inserted an automatic slideshow which filters through 24 photos taken at the games. The slideshow is a jQuery script called Simple Controls Gallery courtesy Dynamic Drive DHTML.
Regina Highland Games Secondary Page
The drop-down menu are courtesy of Son of Suckerfish. I love this menu design as it's lightweight, easily skinnable via CSS, and contains the site-map hierarchy in text format as an unordered list, which is great for SEO.
Regina Highland Games Footer
The footer is simple and straightforward. I've included the main event sponsors as well as silouettes of the common figures you'd find at a Highland Games - a drum major, piper, dancer, and heavy events athlete. I kept the text well spaced and place an easy-to-find link to the 'Contact Us' page.
